Mourning Dove in Sycamore

While spending delicious hours exploring the riverbank… and sitting quietly until the rhythm of my being matched the river and I felt at one with the trees and ducks… I saw a mourning dove. Quiet in a sycamore that stood in bleached and shadowed contrast against the blue, blue sky. I wasn’t sure why she captured me until I drew her. The style looks a little too simplistic, but I had to be abstract enough to portray what I saw. Specifics: oil pastel and India ink on white paper (Sorry, prints not available. I sold the original before I had a digital file saved....

Magic Hour

The hour when darkness settles is my favorite of the day. All the colors calm and simplify, while the sky riots in a progression of hues… changing attitude subtly every few moments… and watching is like hearing a grand orchestra play Beethoven. The first stars shimmer, and all the world seems so close and so possible. I used simple white line for the mystical additions because sometimes it seems you can see magic if your eyes were only strong enough to detect the translucency. The icons symbolize different facets of the wonder I experience (and yep… that’s a gnome under a toadstool). Original specifics: Acrylic paint on canvas board Options: 8×10″ original, sprayed with...

Inscribed

“Inscribed”, a charcoal & graphite piece, is the oldest (circa ’06) of my work that is available for the viewing of the general populace. 🙂 It was inspired by a friend of mine, who read the verse “I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands” during the difficult experience of losing a family member to cancer. The visual of Jesus’ wounds provided her with a lot of comfort, and her description of her thoughts resonated with me. Original specifics: Charcoal and graphite on white paper Specifics: graphite and charcoal on white paper   Options: 11×14″ original, finished with an invisible coating to affix charcoal 11×14″ archival-quality print on watercolor-weight paper 11×14″ archival-quality...

Nature Song

As a kid, I spent hours in nature. Thinking, imagining, talking to God, and making things of mud and acorns. My wonder at the colors, life, and complexity of creation just keeps growing. This piece was inspired by watching sunrises, when all the world is fresh and waking quietly. The colors, movements, and sounds harmonize in a tune too real to be audible, and you have to both see and listen to feel it. I tried to convey a bit of every morning’s magic by using earthy colors, realism for the Queen Anne’s Lace, and a more abstract symbolism for the birds. The idea of birds as notes on a telephone wire staff helped...
